Terrarium kit FAQ

What do you need to build a terrarium?+

At minimum you need five things: a glass vessel, a drainage layer of clay balls (LECA), a thin layer of activated charcoal, a substrate for the plants to root into, and the plants themselves. Long tweezers make planting far easier. Moss, a grow light, a bioactive clean-up crew and distilled water are useful additions depending on your setup.

Do you need a drainage layer in a terrarium?+

Yes — a terrarium has no drainage holes, so water collects at the bottom. A layer of clay balls (LECA) creates a reservoir that keeps excess water away from the roots, which otherwise sit wet and rot. A thin layer of activated charcoal above it helps keep that trapped water fresh.

What is the cheapest way to start a terrarium?+

A budget DIY terrarium kit bundles the main layers for under £10, or you can repurpose a clean glass jar and buy a small bag of LECA, charcoal and coco-fibre substrate separately. The single biggest cost saving is choosing beginner-friendly plants and a vessel you already own.

Can you buy a complete terrarium kit?+

Yes. Complete terrarium kits range from budget "garden in a bottle" starter sets to premium kits that include the glass vessel, substrate layers and live plants ready to assemble. A kit is the fastest way to start; buying each layer separately gives you more control and usually works out cheaper per build.
